Large-scale status check of iconic Brussels heritage
The Brussels Expo site boasts a unique collection of architectural gems, ranging from the historic palaces around the central pond (1935 World’s Fair) to the extensions for Expo 58. To ensure the long-term safety and operation of these twelve palaces, SANACON conducted a comprehensive visual inspection and condition assessment of the concrete elements across the entire site .
Our approach: Structured inspection for asset management Given the enormous size and variety of construction methods — from aerated concrete panels to acid-exposed reinforced concrete — a methodology was used that clearly mapped the complexity of the site .
Key aspects of this project:
Objective condition score: Using the NEN 2767 methodology, each inspected element was given a score from 1 to 6. This provides the manager with an immediate overview of the technical condition, ranging from “excellent” to “technically ready for demolition . “
Detailed damage assessment: Our experts accurately mapped defects such as reinforcement corrosion (rust spots), concrete rot, cracking, and moisture problems through extensive photo reports and plans .
Impact analysis: In addition to the purely technical findings, the impact of the damage on the daily operation and use of the palaces was evaluated .
Strategic recovery advice: Specific advice was formulated for each palace for short- and long-term actions, allowing Brussels Expo to deploy its maintenance budgets in a targeted manner .
