For the first phase of the C-Power wind farm on the Thornton Bank, approximately 30 kilometers off the Belgian coast, SANACON was commissioned to provide technical expertise on the concrete foundation elements. These massive Gravity Based Foundations (GBFs) rest on the seabed and are designed to withstand decades of use in one of the world’s most corrosive environments.
Our approach:
Corrosion monitoring: Implementation and monitoring of sensors for monitoring reinforcement corrosion in the tidal and splash zones.
Chloride ingress: Investigation of chloride diffusion into high-strength concrete to compare theoretical residual life with actual in-situ data.
Sustainability advice: Evaluation of the concrete quality and the effectiveness of the applied protective measures in a maritime environment (exposure class XS3).
