The railway viaduct over the Antwerp Ring Road (R1) in Berchem is a crucial junction in Belgian rail traffic. Due to the intensive loading and exposure to environmental factors, SANACON conducted a detailed concrete engineering study to determine the current condition and remaining lifespan of the structure.
Our approach:
Detailed Inspection: Visual recording of damage patterns such as concrete rot, cracking, and leaks at the bridge piers and abutments.
Corrosion analysis: Performing chloride measurements and carbonation tests to evaluate the protection of the reinforcement, essential in this urban environment with high emissions.
Non-destructive testing: Location of reinforcement and determination of concrete cover to test structural integrity against current standards.
Result: With SANACON’s objective data, the manager has a clear overview of the necessary maintenance work. Our reporting serves as the basis for a targeted recovery plan, ensuring the safety of rail traffic and the underlying Ring Road for decades to come.
