Test load

Are you unsure about the actual load-bearing capacity of a floor, bridge, or other structure? A load test provides the answer based on measurable, objective data — rather than merely theoretical calculations. As part of our stability services, Sanacon performs load tests in accordance with applicable standards, with a strong focus on safety, accuracy, and clear reporting.

What is a test load?

In a load test, a structure is subjected to a controlled, predetermined load, while the deformation and behavior of the structure are accurately measured. This allows for an objective determination of whether a floor, bridge, roof, or other load-bearing structure can effectively withstand the intended load—without having to rely exclusively on calculation models or outdated plans. Within our stability expertise, this is a valuable addition to the classic stability study, particularly for existing structures whose material properties, reinforcement, or current condition are not known with certainty.

Our approach to load testing

Our structural engineers work with a scientifically sound methodology, structured into clear steps:

  • Preliminary investigation: analysis of existing plans, material properties, and load history of the structure.
  • Drawing up a load plan: determining the load level to be tested, measurement points, and safety margins, in accordance with the relevant standards.
  • Execution of the load test: controlled application of the load, with continuous monitoring of deflection, crack formation, and deformation using precision measuring equipment.
  • Analysis and reporting: interpretation of the measurement results and translation into a clear stability recommendation regarding remaining capacity and potential reinforcement needs.

Where necessary, the load test is combined with concrete testing by BETON+ for a fully substantiated stability dossier.

When is a test load recommended?

Within our stability services, we recommend a test load in the following situations:

  • In case of doubt regarding the load-bearing capacity of an existing floor, roof, or bridge, for example for repurposing or increased use.
  • When plans or calculation notes of the original construction are missing or incomplete.
  • As an alternative to or supplement to a theoretical stability study, when an objective, measurable confirmation is desired.
  • In industrial, civil infrastructure, public, or heritage projects where safety and long-term use are central.
